What is a duct-free split system?

Mini splits/duct-free/ductless are heating and cooling systems that are comprised of two parts: an outdoor condensing unit paired with either single or multiple indoor units. This design allows for energy conservation by targeting only those areas that need cooling or heating, a cost effective feature when only certain portions of a home/building are being used.

What is an inverter-driven compressor and how is it different from a conventional air conditioner?

With a conventional air conditioner the system maintains setpoint by turning the whole system on and off, in contrast an inverter-driven compressor ramps up and down to maintain comfort levels. Once an inverter compressor reaches setpoint the smart electronics allow the system to “coast,” using a reduced amount of energy to ensure that the room stays comfortable. This works much like driving your car downhill with your foot off the accelerator—the car is maintaining speed but using less gas. The result is that inverter-drive compressor allows the split systems to operate quietly and efficiently translating to energy savings.

What are the advantages of split system over central air conditioning?

According to the DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, typical duct systems lose 25 to 40 percent of the heating or cooling energy put out by the central furnace, heat pump, or air conditioner. Since duct-free split systems have little or no ductwork, they are inherently more energy efficient than central air conditioning systems.  The most recognized advantage of a duct-free split system is personalized comfort of zoning. Rather than having the whole system set to a single temperature with a central air conditioning system, with a split system each zone can be operated independently and set to precise temperature of the occupant or if the room is not being used that zone can be off saving energy. Some other leading advantages include low maintenance, increased air quality and stylish designs. 

What are the advantages of inverter technology?

Inverter variable-speed outdoor units are measurably quieter and use less energy than conventional air conditioners. Unlike conventional air conditioners that cycle on and off, an inverter compressor ramps up or down to match the capacity and maintain comfort levels. Once the duct-free split system satisfies room temperature, the inverter compressor and smart electronics take over and your system will “coast along” as a car will coast downhill using less gas. What is SEER? 

The HVAC industry provides information that conveys energy consumption to consumers. SEER is the acronym for “Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio,” a number indicating a system’s efficiency when it operates in cooling mode under certain testing conditions. The higher the SEER number, the more efficiently a system will operate. Currently, the HVAC industry’s minimum SEER number for new products is 13. LG offers duct-free split systems with SEER ratings up to 27.5, because of their energy efficiency many LG systems qualify for local rebates and incentives.  

What is HSPF?

The HVAC industry provides information that conveys energy consumption to consumers. HSPF is the acronym for “Heating Seasonal Performance Factor,” a number indicating a system’s efficiency when it operates in heating mode under certain testing conditions. The higher the HSPF number, the more efficiently a system will operate. Currently, the HVAC industry’s minimum HSPF number for new products is 7.7. LG offers duct-free split systems with HSPF ratings up to 11.8.

Are LG indoor units available in various colors?

Most wall-mounted LG duct-free split indoor units have an off-white or pearl white finish. In addition to the standard white finishes, LG also offers exclusive, award-winning designs including the Art Cool™ Mirror with a shiny charcoal mirror finish - great for matching kitchen appliances - and the Art Cool Gallery which is a picture frame style that allows you to display and change the art. Additionally if you aren't a fan of the wall-mounted units, you can also do a ducted split system and take advantage of inverter technology but maintain a more traditional look and feel.  

Do LG duct-free split systems come with a warranty?

Yes. Most LG duct-free split systems come with a Standard Limited Liability Warranty program: ten (10) year parts and ten (10) year compressor warranty on qualified systems. LG Excellence Contractors are eligible, with proper registration, for extended warranties on the products they install of additional two (2) year parts and two (2) years compressor warranty for qualifying residential/light commercial systems; extending their Standard Limited Liability Warranty to 12 years for the parts and compressor - giving customers additional piece of mind.

LG split systems are not available through retail stores. To purchase one of these systems, contact a qualified HVAC contractor. 

Are LG duct-free split systems easy to maintain?

Yes. Cleaning and maintaining an LG duct-free system is easy and simple and without ductwork there is not need to clean ducts. LG indoor units include a reusable, washable filter that is easy to remove and it is recommended that they are cleaned regularly.
